Sustainable tourism may be defined as the concept of visiting a place as a tourist and trying to make only a positive impact on the environment, society and economy. Tourism can involve primary transportation to the general location, local transportation, accommodations, entertainment, recreation, nourishment and shopping.
We at Richmond Adventure Planning can help you achieve your goal of sustainable tourism by using the wind to power us on your lake or ocean adventure. We also provide nourishment from foodstuffs produced from our own garden and greenhouse.
We care about sustainable tourism, which is why we are a proud
supporter of the UNESCO Bras d’Or Lake Biosphere Reserve Association
(BLBRA). Our captain is actually a board member of the BLBRA.
UNESCO has identified the Bras d’Or Lake watershed as a place where
people strive to live sustainably with nature and we want to show our
guests that it is possible where they live as well. For us, this is a very
important issue that has an impact on the whole world.
Sustainability describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. It is about the equilibrium of species with the resources of their environment. It also applies to the exploitation of a resource, below its renewal limit. One exciting opportunity for the Bras d’Or Lake is the redevelopment of the oyster industry which was decimated, it is believed, by both overfishing and the MSX parasite. Some first nations groups have been having success growing these in the surface waters instead of on the bottom which has been shown to inhibit the parasite. On longer adventure tours we have time to anchor and snorkel around old oyster beds.
